May Is National Electrical Safety Month

Fire Restoration

Did you know that every year, home electrical fires cause approximately 51,000 fires, nearly 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries and $1.3 billion in property damage? In an effort to raise awareness and promote prevention of electrical fires, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) has designated May as National Electrical Safety Month.

During this month, ESFI educates the public about how to reduce electrical hazards. This year’s campaign highlights important changes in the new 2017 National Electrical Code (NEC) through ESFI’s fourth edition of the National Electrical Safety Month publication, Electrical Safety Illustrated.

The latest issue, “Decoding the NEC to Prevent Shock and Electrocution”, provides tips on industry standard safety upgrades and guidelines to remain on par with the national code. The National Electrical Code is the U.S. standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment. NEC is updated every three years.

ESFI’s National Electrical Safety Month 2017 campaign features a comprehensive collection of new and updated resources to help facilitate an effective electrical safety awareness campaign for your community, organization, school, or family.

On ESFI’s website, you can access an extensive collection of fact sheets and related safety tips, templates and tools. You can use these resources, as well as other media outreach materials and social media content to promote electrical safety and National Electrical Safety Month.

Raising awareness about electrical dangers is key to reducing electrical fires, related injuries, and death.  National Electrical Safety Month is a great time to inspect your home and work environment for potential electrical hazards. Contact a qualified electrician to make sure your home is safe and up to code. For professional fire damage repair or smoke remediation services, contact your local PuroClean office.
