When our homes require cleaning, we usually focus on the visible areas, such as the floor or windows. However, there are numerous other areas in our homes which are easy to overlook, that harbor the same amount (if not more) of dust and dirt. Here are some of them:
1. Decorative pillows – all sorts of particles, such as dust mites and dead skin, accumulate into decorative or throw pillows. Remove these particles by running the vacuum’s upholstery attachment over pillows. Alternatively, launder the pillow covers, but make sure to follow the instructions.
2. Curtains and upholstery – use the vacuum to clean the dust and other allergens that may be hidden in these fabrics. Washing or cleaning them could be possible, but check the manufacturer’s label first.
3. Coffeemaker – over time, hard water and brewing residue build up in your coffeemaker, altering the taste and quality of the coffee. Clean the coffeemaker by running a mix of one part white vinegar, one part hot water. Pause the machine halfway through the cycle and wait one hour. Run only hot water to wash away the smell of vinegar.
4. Dishwasher – it may not seem likely, but dishwashers do require periodic cleaning, as they can trap food leftovers, hard water build-up, mold or soap scum. Remove and clean the filter, then run a wash cycle with baking soda or a heavy-duty cleaning agent.
5. Washing machine – these appliances are susceptible to mold and mildew and will require cleaning if you notice that clothes smell musty after a wash. Run a hot cycle with white vinegar and baking soda to solve the problem.
6. Behind and under major appliances, such as the refrigerator, washing machine and oven. Dust and dirt will accumulate in these areas, even though you can’t see it. Be sure to move these appliances carefully when cleaning, preferably in the spring and fall.
7. Switches, handles and knobs – due to their frequent usage, these mechanisms require cleaning with a disinfectant from time to time, especially those in the bathroom and kitchen.
8. Pet items – although you keep your pet clean, the items it uses (i.e. toys, bed) may be a breeding ground for bacteria, and even for ticks or fleas. Clean the pet bed in the washing machine. Toys or other pet items can also be cleaned in the washing machine, but consider placing them in a net first.
9. Ceiling fans – the blades on your ceiling fan can be tricky to clean, so make sure to use an extended-reach duster. Another option to consider is to use an old pillow case in which you can trap the dust.
10. Cleaning tools and products – obviously, the utensils you use for everyday cleaning, such as brooms, brushes or plastic scrapers, will become dirty after a while if you don’t clean them. Consider cleaning the spray bottle themselves, as well.
