Innovative

PuroClean RapidDefense™ is the best way to sanitize public areas. Our system helps stop the spread of pathogen-based illnesses, such as Influenza and Norovirus.

Traumatic accidents or events that may have resulted in injury or death, need the services of certified biohazard remediation professionals. PuroClean’s biohazard cleaning consists of the thorough cleaning and application of EPA approved hospital grade disinfectants and then completely deodorizing the area. Chemical spills, blood, and human or animal remains are examples of biohazard materials that call for professional cleaning.

Included Within The Biohazard Cleanup Services

When police and investigators finish gathering all the evidence from a crime scene, they are not responsible for any of the actual sanitizing of the scene. Once police release the scene, the responsibility is with the owner of the premises to procure biohazard cleaning services. The biohazard cleaning crew can only begin their work after authorities have officially released the scene.

BOPIM Standard

In 1991, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) put forth a standard to protect workers from the dangers of blood or other possibly infectious materials (BOPIM). Infectious pathogens include the Hepatitis B virus, HIV, the 2019 Novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and many others.

This standard helps protect approximately 5.6 million workers in the healthcare field and related occupations, which also includes biohazard restoration companies. Biohazard remediation is within the scope of the BOPIM standard.

The BOPIM standard also has a few requirements, as follows:

  • Record keeping
  • Mandatory training
  • Specific required vaccinations
  • Proper handling, transport and disposal of hazardous medical waste materials
  • Using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Using work practice controls
  • Conduct a Health and Safety Assessment (OSHA requirement)

Common Biohazard Situations

  • Crime or homicide scenes
  • Suicide or death
  • Blood and bodily fluid
  • Hoarding scenes
  • Animal waste or remains
  • Chemical hazards
  • Coronavirus contamination

Every single time that PuroClean technicians handle materials that are possibly hazardous, they are taking a chance of significant risk to their safety. This is the reason that following correct safety methods and specific training procedures are necessary. Following these procedures is not only important to the technician’s safety, but for the safety of tenants who will later reside and occupy the affected space once the biohazard cleanup and restoration is finished.

Is Certification Required to Perform Biohazard Cleanup?

It is not obligatory to obtain a certification to become a biohazard technician. However OSHA does require biohazard technicians to correctly wear PPE when handling bloodborne pathogens. Also, you may want to check your local city, state, and federal regulators for possible licensing requirements, laws, background checks, fingerprinting, or any other factors that may be required to perform remediation work. For example, the state of Georgia passed a law that involves companies providing remediation services related to trauma and crime scene cleanup.

To protect the safety of our workers, PPE is used as the final barrier of defense. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) protects the body from coming into contact with hazardous materials, via the skin, eyes, mouth, nose, or any other body parts. PPE requirements change depending on the job, but should always include cut resistant and nitrile gloves, full face guard, appropriately designated waterproof coveralls, and a respirator.

Reputable remediation companies offer biohazard restoration training for individuals. Learning OSHA’s on-the-job safety methods for handling biohazard waste is included in the training. The technician’s training greatly reduces the risk of potential lawsuits and injuries from accidents.

The PuroClean Process of Biohazard Cleanup

  • The first task of the restoration crew is to inspect and flag all areas that need biohazard cleanup, perform a health and safety assessment, and identify the scope of the biohazard cleanup. When the technicians have a plan mapped out, restoration begins immediately
  • All technicians will take measures to ensure their safety and the safety of anyone close to the biohazard affected locations.
  • The PuroClean technicians will then remove and dispose of all possibly infectious materials from your property.
  • OSHA regulations dictate exactly how hazardous medical waste is to be handled. For example: spinal fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid, and any additional bodily fluids are carefully handled and relocated to a licensed hazardous medical waste incinerator.
  • According to state regulations and industry standards, technicians are required to eradicate porous materials such as fabric and carpeting that cannot be properly cleaned.
  • Non-porous items that are salvageable will be cleaned with hospital grade disinfectants. If these items are unable to be restored, our technicians will remove and dispose of the items.
  • Following the cleaning process, technicians deodorize all affected locations and return these areas to pre-contamination condition and appearance. One thing to do that proves areas are completely cleaned and ready again for habitation is to have a licensed industrial Hygienist conduct clearance testing.
  • Odors can usually be managed by the eradication of unsalvageable affected materials and by cleaning items with hospital-grade cleaning products. However, difficult situations may call for further procedures of deodorization to achieve success.

Biohazard Cleanup Provided with Empathy

As with any type of property damage, PuroClean remediation professionals ensure that any actions do not worsen your feeling of loss of the property owners. PuroClean owners and technicians are exceptionally sensitive, understanding that the individuals involved can be emotionally vulnerable. PuroClean technicians sympathize with all materially interested individuals dealing with these traumatic situations.

Cleaning and application of hospital grade cleaners of frequently touched items and surfaces are the much needed actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, like coronavirus. Since any surface can be re-contaminated after cleaning, and since the coronavirus is also spread person-to-person, PuroClean’s cleaning services are not guaranteed to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html) for more information about coronavirus, its spread, and prevention.
