How to Prevent Mold in Your Attic

Mold Restoration

Mold grows in the attic when there is a moisture problem. The roof may leak, ventilation may not be sufficient, or appliances may blow air into the attic – these are some of the most common causes of excessive attic moisture and mold growth. Below are essential tips to reduce attic moisture and create a mold-free environment in your attic:

  • Check for roof leaks that produce moisture in your attic. Inspect the insulation and wood (such as joists and rafters) for discoloration – this may be a sign of water damage. Check the area where the two roofs join at an angle – this area is prone to cracks and roof leaks. The area around attic plumbing stacks may also suffer from leaks.
  • Ensure proper attic ventilation. The moisture levels in your attic increase without proper ventilation. Proper attic ventilation is particularly important in winter, when warm air rises to ceiling, enters the attic, and condenses on the cold surfaces of the attic. Your attic should have adequate ventilation so that moisture created by condensation can escape. Also make sure your attic vents (soffit, ridge, and gable-mounted vents) are not covered with insulation. There are many ways to improve attic ventilation, so be sure to consult a specialist.
  • Ensure adequate attic insulation. Attic insulation controls the temperature and moisture levels in the attic. In winter, attic temperature should be at or near the outside air temperature. Have your attic floor properly insulated to minimize the air transfer between the living area and the attic. Ensure that the insulation of other areas and surfaces in to the attic, such as those of heating ducts, are also in good shape.
  • Vent appliances to the outside. Your dryer, kitchen, and bathroom vents should always blow the air to the outside and not in the attic. Otherwise, your attic ventilation system could become overwhelmed and may not be able to eliminate the resulting moisture efficiently.
