5 Steps a Colorado Homeowner Should Take When they have Water Damage

In The Community

Here in Colorado, we have a very interesting climate. The air is dry, we do not have a ton of flood plains, and we are certainly as far away from sea level as you can get. Other than crazy weather events like we had in 2013, you’d be likely to think that water damage isn’t very likely to happen to you. However, you would be surprised to find out we have a fair amount of weather abnormalities that make water damage in your home as likely as if you lived next to the ocean. Broken pipes, sprinkler lines bursting, toilet overflows, and sump pump failures are more common then you would think! Here is a list of Five steps a Colorado homeowner should take when there is Water Damage in their home!

  1. Turn Your Water Off: If you know exactly where the water is coming from, for example, a dishwasher, Or washing machine, turn the water supply off at the source. Otherwise, find the Main Water Shutoff Valve, and shut it off.
  2. Open Your Windows: Colorado has a very dry climate, opening windows allows that dry air in, and the humid air out. Make sure only to do this if it is not inexplicably humid (we all know this is rare in Denver)
  3. If the carpet is wet, remove any contents that may transfer dyes, for example; clothing, bedding, toys, wooden furniture, and trash. This will keep the dyes from transferring onto your carpet causing permanent stains. Place clear plastic sheeting under anything touching the carpet that can’t be moved out, especially anything with metal footings. This will prevent rusty spots on your carpet that are difficult to remove.
  4. Place a heat source, like a space heater, in the damaged area. In the Denver Metro Area we have a cold climate, heating the space will prevent it from reaching dew point which will cause secondary damage.
  5. Call PuroClean Certified Restoration Specialists as soon as possible. The best way to prevent secondary damage like mold is to get your Water Damage mitigated immediately!

Taking these steps will help decrease the severity of your Water Damage Restoration. Getting you back to normal, and in pre-loss conditions faster and in a more cost-effective manner!
