Mold infestation in Deerfield Beach: How to solve this problem? 

Brenda is a snowbird who returned to her vacation house in Deerfield Beach, Florida, only to find it was filled with mold. This is how Puroclean quickly and diligently remediated her problem. 

When Brenda returned to her vacation house in Deerfield Beach, Florida, she discovered that the entire guest room and bathroom had a mold infestation. When she first opened the door noticed a solid damp odor. That was the first warning sign. But it wasn’t until she turned on the lights that she saw all her furniture, bed, and even walls invaded with big round black dots. 

“I’m a snowbird; I live in Canada and normally come back to Florida during the winter. However, the house was closed only for four months, so I don’t understand how this mold infestation occurred. I’m distraught because my husband has asthma, so it’s essential for me to get rid of the mold as soon as possible.”, explained Brenda.

After a little investigation, she decided to call PuroClean of Deerfield Beach. When the restoration company arrived, they contacted a certified mold inspector, who took air quality and surface tests and began working on the protocol. PuroClean first contained the area and placed negative air pressure with air scrubbers to guarantee the spores don’t volatilize and land in other rooms. 

The Correct Procedure

“It is crucial to isolate the mold-affected area and properly begin the cleaning. But, first, we must vacuum every surface; it’s the only way to catch the mold spores and prevent them from expanding throughout the property”, explained Erick Salas, general manager of PuroClean of Deerfield Beach. 

Once the vacuuming was through, the restoration crew removed all the affected furniture that wasn’t salvageable and adequately placed it in bags to prevent further contamination. 

“There were wood sideboards destroyed by mold infestation. Mold only grows in organic materials, such as wood and paper, so it is important to evaluate the damage on those surfaces and make decisions. If there is active mold growth in it, and the core of the material it’s compromised, it is better to dispose it.”, explained a technician of the PuroClean crew. 

It is also essential to assess and determine the source of the problem, and measure the moisture levels in the room. In this case, it was caused by an AC malfunction. If the place is still damp, try to dry it with air scrubbers and large dehumidifiers. 

“When you have mold problems, it’s better to avoid using air movers or fans to dry the place. This equipment causes the spores to volatilize and contaminate other parts of the premises. Instead, we should use methods that prevent airflow in the area and try to dry everything locally”, pointed out Salas. 

Sanitizing and containing

The Puroclean crew scrapped various items severely affected by the mold. Nevertheless, they could keep essential belongings such as a classic bed frame, and a glass table, among other things. 

“Right from the beginning, I knew many items were extremely compromised and needed to be thrown away. So, I just asked them to please save the bed frame and a couple of things that belonged to my mother. The PuroClean crew was empathetic and could thoroughly clean and save those important objects. I’m so very grateful for that”, explained Brenda, the homeowner. 

The next step was to spray everything with chlorine peroxide to thoroughly eliminate the active molds and prevent them from growing back. “Chlorine Peroxide is the most effective mold killer out there right now. After that, we thoroughly cleaned the walls, ceiling, and ceramic floor, vacuuming spores and other remaining’s.”, explained a PuroClean technician. 

Finally, the restoration crew vacuumed one last time, and left a dehumidifier and an air scrubber to dry the premises altogether. After 24 hours, the house was back to a pre-loss condition, and the family was able to return home, since the final air quality and surface mold tests returned negative.
