During the last week of January, the Wisconsin state experienced extremely cold weather. The “once-in-a-generation deep freeze”, which is how media dubbed it, was caused by a polar vortex that made wind chills drop to as low as -55 degrees.
When temperatures plummet so low, both people and their properties are in danger. In homes and properties, the biggest risk is freezing pipes that can burst and cause immense water damage. But why do some frozen pipes rupture in the first place?
Why Frozen Pipes Burst
Contrary to popular belief, pipes don’t burst because water expands when frozen, but due to the increase in pressure to the side of the frozen section. And, if you don’t thaw the pipe properly, it has a higher chance of rupturing because the water from melting ice in the pipe raises the pressure further. Learn how to thaw frozen pipes properly or call a professional.
Pipes can also burst from a sudden increase in outdoor temperature. This is why pipe bursting is especially common at the end of winter when the ice starts to thaw. The Wisconsin state experienced a thaw similar to those that occur in early spring. Our thaw started on February 2 when temps reached the 40’s – and it rained!
Emergency Flood Restoration in Wisconsin
During the Wisconsin cold spell, we were called to respond to multiple pipe bursts that caused extensive water loss in homes and businesses. Even the city water mains broke, which led to severe sewage flooding in several properties.
Despite the big number of incidents, PuroClean of Green Bay, Wisconsin was ready to come to property owners’ rescue. We provided non-stop emergency flood restoration in Green Bay and nearby towns.
In one job, our customer was very pleased with technicians being on site within two hours considering it was a 40-minute drive to their home. Here’s the review that Liysa C. from Manitowoc, Wisconsin left for us:
“Our basement had a category 3 water back up from the city. So there were 8 houses affected. We are so glad our agent Lundberg & Associates Inc, American Family Insurance told us of the choices. We had a crew here within two hours (we are 40 minutes away). Not only were they knowledgeable, you could tell there was a process. They explained the water, the clean up. They were very respectful and understanding to our concerns. Patient and kind and even took on some of my rambling. There isn’t any other team I’d recommend, especially after comparing notes with my neighbors.”
Reviews like these are very humbling and we’re proud of the results we’ve accomplished. Shout out to our water damage technician, Jaymeson Kirt, who led the emergency flood restoration team that restored Ms. Liysa’s home.
