JULIE HOLTON: Flooding doesn’t just damage the structure of a house it can also destroy precious keepsakes like photos. Steve let’s say a pipe bursts and photos get wet, what do we do?
STEVE SCOTT: Start working to save things as quickly as possible after a flood. Really we have two days before things start to become moldy and deteriorating. For photos, you have the best chance of saving them while they are still wet. Otherwise, you might damage the photo when you try to remove it from the frame. To safely separate the photo from the frame, gently rinse it with water, wash away any dirt or debris, and then carefully remove the photo. Be careful not to touch the front. Lay the photo on paper towel and let it air dry. Change the paper towel every one or two hours so that it keeps absorbing the moisture. For really old photos talk to professional first, it’s going to be more sensitive to damage and restoration
