JULIE HOLTON: During our cold Michigan winters, property damage is at an all-time high. Steve how can we prevent problems?
STEVE SCOTT: We’re tough enough to handle the cold, so let’s get our homes and businesses ready too. Insulate windows, doors, and air ducts. Protect pipes from freezing by wrapping both cold and warm water pipes with insulation. When you leave keep the temperature at least 55 degrees. If you’re going to be gone for a long period of time, you may even want to invest in technology that allows you to check your thermostat from your phone. If you haven’t already, have your heating system inspected to make sure it’s working efficiently and set reminders to change the furnace filters each month during the cold season. We always seem to get at least one storm that knocks out power, you may also want to invest now in a generator.
