In Columbia, Maryland, the Christ Episcopal Church is a well-known historical landmark in the community. Its brick aesthetic earned the church the moniker “Old Brick.” When they renovated the church in 1993, it was fittingly dubbed “New Brick” by the community. In December of 2020, “New Brick” suffered from a major flood, and they called in PuroClean Restoration Services to perform the restoration.
Performing the Restoration
We arrived on site quickly to begin the job, as the size of the building suggested that the scope of the job would be large. Our technicians determined that the cause of the flood was a burst pipe within the sprinkler system, which spread water over most of the sanctuary. The insurance company wanted us to save most of the hardwood floors, but we advocated on behalf of the church’s best interests and explained that salvaging the wood floors would be impractical.
There were three main elements of the job that we performed: drying, demolition, and sanitization. We covered all of the pews with tarps before we started. Then, we began the drying process by extracting water absorbed in the carpets.
Next, we worked on the demolition. Our technicians used a lift to reach the ceiling and remove damaged drywall, while others were removing the hardwood floors. We performed this task on select areas, so it was not something that blanketed the entire building. We finished the work by sanitizing, so mold growth would not be a problem.
The client was pleased with our work. They wrote us a letter thanking us for being “respective and concerned” with the well-being of the church and that we “rode in like the cavalry.”
