Everybody loves to save money and January 10 is a perfect opportunity for doing just that. It’s National Cut Your Energy Costs Day, a day created to encourage homeowners, renters, business owners, and property managers to explore energy-saving options and keep up with scheduled maintenance. Practicing efficient energy consumption methods benefits the consumer and the environment simultaneously. Here are just some of the ways you can participate in these efficient practices and save some cash.
What You Can Do To Cut Your Energy Costs
It’s often the little things that can save you big money on your energy bill, such as:
- Weatherproof your home. This process helps your home retain heat and seal up exposures in the foundation. It also keeps the heat out in the summer, saving money on air conditioning.
- Replace old windows and furnaces with new energy-efficient versions. Newer windows reduce the effect of sunlight on the temperature in the house. Similarly, newer furnaces use less energy to produce heat.
- Properly maintain the furnace. An unmaintained furnace can be dangerous, but also is likely not operating at its most efficient.
- Use solar heat when possible. The sun is the most infinite source of renewable energy we have. Best of all, it’s free to use for everyone.
- Turn down thermostats. Depending on the season and where you live, the ideal house temperature for both comfort and efficiency is typically between 68o and 78oF. In the summer, set the thermostat to 78oF, and 68oF in the winter.
- Turn off lights when leaving a room. We don’t mean to sound like your dad, but if nobody is in the room, you shouldn’t be paying to keep the lights on.
- Use energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs. Not only do they use less energy, but they also last much longer, meaning you won’t need to buy replacements as often.
- Run dishwasher and washing machine only when fully loaded. Dishwashers use water and electricity. Using them only when they’re full is a great way to ensure you are not running it more than necessary.
- Lower the water heater temperature. Heated water requires more energy to reach higher temperatures. Not heating the water any more than necessary saves energy.
- Take shorter showers. The fans at your live music concert might be disappointed, but this will conserve water and energy usage.
- Unplug unused appliances. Electronics can still consume trace amounts of energy in their idle states.
- Carpool whenever possible. Having one car burning fuel is enough as is. Taking one car will save money and help protect the environment.
