Family Fire Safety

Fire Restoration

When a fire breaks out in the home we tend to panic. Being prepared and having a plan is key to keep you and your family safe. Follow these fire prevention and planning tips to make sure you are safe.

Fire Prevention:

  • Have working smoke alarms in every level of the home, test monthly and make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of it.
  • Know where the fire extinguisher is mounted and make sure everyone in the family knows how to use it; Only use when it’s safe to.
  • Teach everyone the “Stop, Drop and Roll” technique in case clothing catches on fire.
  • Ensure that all family members know how to contact each other in case of an emergency by creating a family communication plan.
  • Teach children that matches, lighters and candles are tools, not toys. Store items in a safe storage area and out of reach of children.

Fire Escape Plan:

  • Everyone in the house should participate. Locate all possible exits and escape routes and draw a floor plan of your home with the location of smoke alarms.
  • If possible, establish two exits for each room. Make sure the escape routes are clear and the windows can easily be opened. Practice each escape route regularly and during the evening hours.
  • Windows and doors with security bars should have emergency release devices to be able to open them quickly.
  • Assign a responsible person to help children, elderly people, and those with disabilities to escape the fire.
  • Choose an outside meeting place for all household members to go after escaping the house, such as the mailbox or stop sign. Decide where you would go from there – a neighbor’s house, a motel, etc.
  • Introduce kids to fire safety children’s books. They are designed to explain basic fire safety concepts in a non-threatening way.
  • If you have a 2 or 3 story house store a fire ladder in each upper level room.
