Mitigating Mold from a Snowbird’s Home

Many “snowbirds” from New York migrate south for the colder months. But with the outbreak of COVID-19, some have decided to stay clear of traveling back for the summer. This results in leaving their property unattended or neglected for longer periods. Recently, PuroClean were called to service a snowbird’s home for mold from a leaky ice maker while the tenants were still out-of-state.

Cleaning up Mold Caused by a Leaky Ice Maker

The tenant called us from Florida to mitigate water loss coming from the ice maker in the refrigerator. According to them, the ice maker had been leaking for several weeks while they were not home. Also, in just two days, they were planning on permanently moving out of the house. The circumstances put pressure on our team to get the leak fixed quickly.

The client lived in Florida and was renting the home. Due to COVID-19, the client was not able to travel back to NY. So, we had to communicate via text, phone, and email, which added an extra challenge.

Upon arrival, our technicians discovered visible mold on both sides of the drywall behind the refrigerator. In order to officially proceed, we were required to notify the insurance carrier. They had us call in a mold assessor who confirmed it was, in fact, mold, but also found extensive mold under the laminate flooring in the adjacent living room.

First, we set up dehumidifiers to stabilize the environment until the lab reports came back, and we had a protocol to follow. Within 24 hours, we were back to set up containment and start the remediation and dry out. Our team completed the work within a week of getting the protocol report.

The customer was thrilled with how quickly we got the job done. There were new tenants set to move in, and because of the speed of our work, they experienced only a minimal delay. The client was able to get a contractor in right behind us to put some finishing touches on the restoration.
