The Spark of Inspiration
My journey into building a local superhero business: damage restoration, began in an unexpected place: Puerto Rico, in the aftermath of a devastating storm. I was there working on a hotel project, alongside the conglomerate of PuroClean franchise, Signal Restoration. Their ethics, professionalism, and organization struck a chord with me, resonating deeply with the values I upheld in my own national construction company. My work often took me across the US, the Caribbean, and surrounding areas. However, life had a new adventure in store for me. I became a father right before the pandemic, and suddenly, traveling five days a week was no longer appealing. I yearned to be present for my son’s development, sparking a desire for a change that would complement my existing business while allowing me to plant roots closer to home.
A Call for Quality
The turning point came from personal experience. My parents’ home in Tarpon Springs flooded, and the response from one of the largest restoration companies in the area was disheartening. It took them four months to address the damage in a small 250 sq ft room, a delay exacerbated by their reliance on subcontracting and a clear lack of quality control. This experience, combined with my background as a licensed mold remediator in Florida and my work with Signal, illuminated a path forward. I saw an opportunity to become a local superhero—saving homes and businesses from water, fire, mold, and floods with a franchise that valued speed, quality, and direct communication.
Laying the Foundation
Embarking on this new venture required preparation. I attended PuroClean’s headquarters for three weeks of intensive training and certification, furthering my expertise with courses from the Microbial Warrior Academy and Jon Don for specialized restoration work. This foundation was crucial, as was my commitment to continuous learning through PuroClean’s online academy, which kept me abreast of the latest in insurance claims processing, sales, and business development.
Overcoming Early Challenges
The transition wasn’t without its hurdles. Convincing homeowners, skeptical from past negative experiences with damage restoration companies, of our integrity and efficiency proved challenging. Additionally, adapting to a lifestyle of being on call 24/7 for emergencies was a significant shift, especially before I had a team to share the load.
Success Through Service
Yet, with each project—whether it involved water, flood, fire, mold, biohazard cleanup, or odor removal—the gratitude from homeowners reaffirmed my decision. Restoring their lives and preserving their memories and mementos has been immensely rewarding.
