Toilet and sewer line backups could result in sewage entering your basement or other portions of your home or company. This dark, thick water is very hazardous and contains many dangerous contaminants. These contaminants are made up of pathogens, bacteria and viruses and cause health risks and illness dangers if humans or animals become exposed. Repairing these problems ASAP is highly important, as is removing sewage from your property. Having knowledge of what may lead to sewer backups may help you avoid a hazardous situation in your home or basement. Please see this list of things that may aid in stopping sewage backups that may occur in your home or business:

Why Sewage Backup Occurs

  • Clogged Sewer Line – Sewage backs up into your home or business when your drain lines or main sewer lines become occluded. As an example: if one toilet starts a sewage backup, the connected drain and/or many toilets and the main sewer may become fouled.
  • Imposing Tree Roots – Trees with large strong imposing roots have the potential to grow through and around pipes, even crushing sewer lines. Tree roots are able to reach a long distance and damage your pipes, leading to a sewer backup. Keep an eye out for roots near your drain lines or septic tank area to prevent damage.
  • Aging & Damaged Sewer Lines – Aging sewer lines, pipes, drains and septic systems will fail by slowly weakening and crumbling over time – leading to sewage backups, flooded homes, and basements full of sewer water. Keep in mind the age of your home and surrounding area and keep an eye out for these potential problems.
  • Large Rainfall Amounts – Heavy amounts of rainfall can overwhelm your main storm and sewer mains. If it happens that your public sewers can’t handle large rainfall amounts, the water can make its way into the sewer lines linked to the mainline, and set your home or business in a potentially dangerous risk of sewer backup. There is a risk of severe health issues when in and around rising waters in your town or city that occurs from flooding in rivers and streams, hurricanes, and other associated weather, when water blends with sewage, impurities and chemicals. When wading in these waters use extreme caution, and also when the water decreases and starts drying. Organic matter that is dried out can then turn aerosolized and present a danger of breathing in these contaminants. Be positive to use proper PPE to protect against these dangerous risks.
