Protecting Your Home: Understanding Indoor Flooding Issues

Water Restoration

Indoor flooding….what does that even mean? Isn’t flooding something that happens when a monsoon hits our Arizona desert? Yes, and it can also mean that some source of water in your home let loose and flooded what should be your home, your sanctuary, your safe space. It could be a burst pipe, an overflowing washing machine, an obstructed or loose drain line or a number of other potential sources. Here we will discuss washing machines, broken pipes and clogged drains.

Washing Machine Woes

While washing machines bring convenience to our daily routines, they also harbor the potential for indoor flooding. Washing machines have the potential to overflow, leak from the supply line, or leak from the drain line. Overflows are probably the toughest to prevent because they are typically caused by a faulty water level sensor or pressure valve. Both are challenging for a homeowner to diagnose with an inspection. However, if you do experience an overflow, turn off the water supply line immediately. You should have a shut off valve directly behind the machine.

Washing machines can also leak during the spin cycle if they are unbalanced. Make sure your machine is sitting level so this doesn’t happen. If the machine is unbalanced that can cause it to shake which can lead to another problem…loose hoses or drain lines.

A loose supply hose or loose drain line can cause water to drip, run or even spray out. Make sure you periodically do a visual inspection of the hoses and lines when the machine is running. This can prevent a lot of headaches caused by water damage.

Broken Water Pipes

Broken water pipes cause trillions of damages to homes every year. The hard water we have here in North Scottsdale, Phoenix and the Valley of the Sun causes corrosion. While corrosion on the inside of the pipe is not visible, look for signs on the outside, such as mineral deposits or discoloration. Mineral deposits at joints and valves are a visual sign that the pipe may be corroded. Corroded pipes are potential time bombs for indoor flooding. To fix corroded pipes before they burst, contact a licensed plumber.

Clogged Drains

When we think of indoor flooding, we are often thinking of a clogged drain line.   Whether it’s a clogged toilet, sink, or shower drain, clogged drains may sound like a minor annoyance, yet they have the potential to cause indoor flooding and major water damage.

Water damage from a drain line is often worse than damage from a supply line because drain lines carry the waste water away from our homes and therefore, they are a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and viruses.

Clogged drains often start as slow drains and over time evolve into a full-on clog. To avoid potential costly water damage from a clogged drain, take steps to keep your drain lines clear. Make sure you have a strainer to catch hair or other debris over the drain. Do not put grease or large amounts of food down the drain. Never flush paper products other than toilet paper down the toilet. If your drains do start to slow down, you can try an over the counter enzyme or chemical clog remover or have a professional clear your pipes.

Regularly inspecting your Scottsdale home serves as an excellent preventive measure against water damage. Detecting leaks and moisture early enables corrective action before the situation becomes worse.
