In most cases, dealing with biohazard materials means working with chemical spills, blood, human or animal remains. A traumatic event that resulted in injury or death are circumstances that call for biohazard restoration. The actual biohazard cleanup involves cleaning, applying EPA approved hospital grade disinfectants, and deodorizing locations where traumatic events have occurred.

Included Within The Biohazard Cleanup Services

Keep in mind that the state is not responsible for cleaning up a crime scene. Once police investigators collect evidence from the scene, it is the responsibility of the property owner to seek biohazard cleaning services. A professional cleanup company can arrive onsite only after the police have gathered all evidence related to the crime.

The Blood Or Other Potentially Infectious Materials Standard

In 1991, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a standard to protect working individuals from the potential dangers of blood or other possibly infectious materials (BOPIM). Infectious pathogens include the Hepatitis B virus, HIV, the 2019 Novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and many others.

This standard helps protect approximately 5.6 million workers in the healthcare industry and related occupations, which also includes biohazard remediation businesses. Biohazard remediation is within the scope of the BOPIM standard.

Also, the BOPIM standard consists of several requirements, including:

  • Conduct a Health and Safety Assessment (OSHA requirement)
  • Using work practice controls
  • Using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Proper handling, transport, and disposal of hazardous medical waste materials
  • Specific required vaccinations
  • Mandatory training
  • Record keeping

Common Biohazard Situations

  • Crime or homicide scenes
  • Suicide or death
  • Blood and bodily fluid
  • Hoarding scenes
  • Animal waste or remains
  • Chemical hazards
  • Coronavirus contamination

PuroClean technicians face significant dangers each and every time they handle materials that are potentially hazardous. For this reason, the use of proper training and safety steps are critically important. The training and safety actions are important for both the technicians employed on the project as well as the tenants who will be occupying the area once the biohazard work is complete.

Does Biohazard Cleanup Require Certification?

To be employed as a biohazard technician, a certificate is not required. However, biohazard technicians are strongly required to wear correct PPE when working around bloodborne pathogens. The state of Georgia recently passed a law which affects any business providing cleanup services related to trauma and crime scene cleaning and restoration. Therefore, you need to review and follow local city, state, and federal regulations that may call for special licensing or have certain rules and regulations in place for licensing requirements, background checks, fingerprinting or more factors that may apply to biohazard cleanup services.

To help ensure the safety of our workers, PPE is used as the final barrier of defense. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) protects the body from coming into contact with hazardous materials, via the skin, eyes, mouth, nose, or any other area. PPE requirements change with each project, but should always include cut resistant and nitrile gloves, full face guard, appropriately designated waterproof coveralls, and a respirator.

Furthermore, reputable restoration companies offer biohazard remediation training for technicians. That includes learning OSHA’s on-the-job safety methods when working with biohazardous materials. Doing this reduces the potential of accidents and probable legal action against you.

PuroClean Biohazard Cleanup Process

  • Upon mobilization, the remediation crew will inspect and find all affected areas, conduct a health and safety assessment, and make a decision as to the scope of the biohazard project. When the technicians have a plan in place, remediation begins right away.
  • PuroClean will first take measures to ensure their safety and the safety of any individuals near the affected areas.
  • Technicians then gather and dispose of all potentially infectious materials from the project.
  • OSHA regulations will indicate how hazardous medical waste is handled. As an example, spinal fluid, peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid, and other body fluids are carefully removed and transported to a licensed hazardous medical waste incinerator.
  • Per industry guidelines and state regulations, technicians have to get rid of porous materials like fabric and carpeting that can’t be adequately cleaned.
  • Hospital-grade disinfectants will be used on non-porous items that can be salvaged. If the items end up being non-restorable, our technicians will remove and dispose of such items.
  • Following the cleaning procedure, technicians will deodorize the affected locations and assure they are returned to pre-contamination conditions and appearance. One method that ensures areas are fully cleansed and ready for people is to have a licensed industrial Hygienist conduct clearance testing.
  • Odors are usually controlled by the removal of uncleanable contaminated items and cleaning with hospital-grade disinfectants. However, difficult situations could require further methods of deodorization to achieve the desired goal.

Providing Biohazard Cleanup Services with Empathy

Whether you’re the customer, occupant or owner of the project location, PuroClean realizes and understands the magnitude of suffering you’re going through. Our restoration teams strive to be exceptionally sensitive and understanding so as not to enhance the sense of loss that may be felt. Biohazard cleanup particularly can be especially traumatic. Therefore, all technicians empathize with all individuals, showing the utmost delicacy and respect throughout the cleanup process.
