Bees and their honeycombs are necessary for plant pollination and play a vital role in our ecosystem. However, they can sometimes build their hives in places they are not welcome, such as people’s homes. Bees create their hives by chewing through a structure’s wood and plaster, which can leave behind unsightly holes and compromise structural integrity.
Additionally, beehives are often located in hard-to-reach areas, such as attics or behind walls, making them difficult to remove. Their honey can attract other pests, such as ants and mice.
As a result, it’s critical to be aware of the potential damage bees can cause to residential property.
Discovering the Odor Source
PuroClean of Wayne recently received a call to investigate an unusual odor from an attic crawl space. The owners, a retired senior couple, requested our help to determine the reason for the smell. Our team responded promptly to the Ringwood, NJ, home to assess the situation.
To our surprise, we found some bees between the eaves and attic insulation at the beginning of our inspection. Our brave PuroClean technicians crawled to this tight spot to make the discovery. There were also a few buzzing around a corner of the attic. To ensure the safety of our team, we donned the necessary protective gear, which consisted of netting. One technician went into the attic again while another put a ladder to the roof joist from the outside.
We were shocked to see a honeycomb spanning roughly three feet by four feet in width and length. Its massive size meant it wrapped around the inside and outside of the house.
Honeycomb Hide-Out No More
Locating the honeycomb took effort, but removing it took tremendous effort! We initially sprayed a nontoxic substance to quiet the bees. Our technicians then gently vacuumed the bees into a padded container to avoid hurting them while carefully removing the honeycomb. Removing a beehive from a structure requires delicate hands, patience, and experienced professionals to ensure the bees’ and everyone’s safety.
Thanks to our devoted technicians, the bees found a new home with a beekeeper in Wantage, New Jersey, who assured us that the healthy bees would rebuild and refill the honeycomb. Our team started the work early morning and wrapped up a few hours later.
Since this job will go down as one of our most memorable, we should also note that our owner, Karl Grebe, is a former apiarist, or beekeeper, who raised bees as a young adult. Our PuroClean work has come full circle!
