Last holiday season, PuroClean of Wellington provided water damage restoration in an apartment building in West Palm Beach. It was a large loss — over 40 rooms were affected! The building was also large; it accommodated 600 people, a third of which were tenants.

A pipe burst on the first floor, flooding the entire ground level, including the main lobby. One rarely thinks of how much of an impact a broken pipe can have until an incident like this happens. In this case, the damage was tremendous.

First, we immediately prioritized the safety of the tenants, the building’s administrative and maintenance crews, and, of course, our own teams. We also followed the property manager’s indications regarding how to best navigate the building. We communicated with him and the other clients daily.

Furthermore, it was business-as-usual in the lobby and they urged us to provide remediation services as fast as possible. While we were drying out the lobby area, their services needed to continue, as uninterrupted as possible.  We fully understood their concerns; the flood happened on December 23!

During this time, most areas had to remain open to people who continued to use the lobby and other affected areas. The main reception area, elevator shafts, ballroom, mechanical room, apartments, tenants’ storage areas, restrooms, and kitchen were all affected to some degree.

To speed up the drying process, our team was working in all of the 40 spaces at the same time. We set up fans and dehumidifiers throughout the flooded areas. But – we had to solve a typical problem in our line of work: having enough power sources for all of the equipment. Thus, we brought fuel-based generators to plug our tools into.

Our technicians used heavy-duty dehumidifiers — specialized tools that condensate and remove excess water from wet surfaces. In addition, air movers helped evaporate the moisture from the walls, carpet, and contents. Drying prevents bacteria, mold growth, and structural damage.

The building manager was very happy with the results. Everyone was able to get back to their normal lives in their newly restored apartments. During this job, our team really shined with their speed, efficiency, and quality of work.
