Mold is not just unsightly, it’s also dangerous. It releases allergens into the air that can cause allergic reactions and other health issues, from mild watery eyes to coughing and sneezing. Lengthy exposure to mold can cause more severe, ongoing issues. Certain people with mold sensitivity or mold allergies can be even more susceptible to these health problems, and need to take extra care when dealing with mold exposure.
Mold Sensitivity Leads to Relocation During Work
We were recently called to a 55+ community in San Antonio, FL to handle mold damage in a home. Our crew arrived promptly to assess the situation and begin the remediation and restoration work. The homeowners were a married couple who both spend the majority of the day in their house as the husband works from home. The wife had severe mold sensitivity, which meant we had to ensure the mold was contained and the containment area remained airtight and completely sealed to keep her protected.
Even with the extra safeguards, they decided it was best for the wife to stay with a friend for a couple of days and, eventually, a local hotel, while our team completed the work. Our main priority was to work quickly – yet cautiously – to get the couple safely back home as soon as possible.
We first set up the large containment around the kitchen area. We made sure to set up two air scrubbers, one inside and the other outside of the containment area, to help with the mold sensitivity. An air scrubber is an extremely effective tool that we use to purify contaminated air. The one set up inside the containment area exhausted out the window, creating negative air pressure to prevent any particles from sneaking out to the rest of the house. The second air scrubber was added as a precaution.
We removed the lower kitchen cabinets, two feet of drywall, and the glued-down hardwood floor during the remediation process. Everything that had been affected by mold needed to be removed and treated. Mold can be tricky and can grow back if left untreated. Thoroughness is vital, and we made sure to remove it all.
We started the mold remediation on a Monday and had everything finished by Saturday. We always take care to follow all safety regulations and precautions during our work, but the homeowner’s mold sensitivity caused our team to be even more cautious throughout the six days. We kept the couple informed of each step we took during the process. They were easy to work with and took care of us as well, offering our crew sodas during the demolition work. We were elated when they were finally able to safely and securely return to their home and workspace.
