PuroClean Performs a Blackwater Cleanup in a St. Petersburg Nursing Home

Performing Blackwater Cleanup

We were called out to a nursing home in St. Petersburg because the wax ring on a toilet in a room on the 3rd floor had broken, and it leaked down the walls to the 1st floor. Although the client was the nursing home itself, the work we needed to perform was in an individual woman’s room on the first floor of the building.

This job is a blackwater cleanup. This term, also known as Category 3 water as categorized by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification), refers to toilet wastewater, likely to be infested with germs from human excretion. The circumstances dictate that our technicians treat this as a biohazard and use full PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to perform the restoration safely.

Since this was a Category 3 water loss, we needed to remove all the affected material. Once we started to remove the walls, we quickly discovered that the leak had been going on for a long time, which led to a large amount of mold growth. When it comes to mold remediation and removing mold on drywall, we chase the mold, and we keep removing drywall until we no longer find any more mold on the drywall. So, we removed all of the cabinets in the kitchen and most of the drywall in the kitchen and bathroom.

In all, our team removed about 30-40% of the drywall in the entire room on the first floor to clear all of the mold. We then sanitized the areas to clean and deodorize all affected areas. After, the area underwent a post-remediation mold test to determine if the process was successful, which it was. Now the job is ready for a construction company to come in and start the rebuild so the tenant can move back into her room.

Because this was a massive job on a commercial property, we had to wait for quite some time before we had the approval to start any demolition. But, once we had the approval, it took us only about three days to complete the restoration for the unit on the first floor. The client was happy that we were able to get the job done correctly and make sure that there was no more mold left and that we passed the mold test the first time.
